Smoky Gradient with Rubi Nail Enamel - When Doves Cry and Models Prefer - Vixen

Hello :)

It feel a little silly talking to no one right now. But I suppose I can treat this like a nail diary until at least one person follows me :p

So...
Dear Diary,

Today I have a smoky gradient using Rubi Nail Enamel - When Doves Cry and Models Prefer - Vixen. Seeing as this is my first ever gradient I'm really pleased with the results. Although clean up was a bitch, my cuticles are still grey in some spots. Pictures after the cut!

I started off with a base of When Doves Cry, a nice dove grey in the bottle, more of a cement grey when dry on the nail. Then, I put two lines on a sponge, one of Vixen and one of WDC, and sponged the black on my tips. Some nails have more black than others but I really do like the result. It's quite a simple technique for such a nice result, although clean up will forever be the death of me.

And apologies for my raggedy cuticles. I have quite sensitive skin (only on my fingers, mind you!) and my cuticles are always receiving the brunt of my skin's issues. They have a tendency to look like they've been dipped in acetone and then rubbed with sand paper no matter how much I moisturise. Here's to hoping when winter comes by they'll fare a little better.

When I was out today getting food for dinner I also stopped by K Mart to pick up some more nail polish remover. They had a bargain box of sorts for assorted BYS polished for $1.00. Bargain. Some of them you could tell immediately why they were discounted. Most of them were half used from people testing them, were clumpy, separated and just plain nasty looking. However I did manage to find what appear to be two gems. I haven't swatched them yet, I've only just got home!

The first one I picked up was BYS Pretty Pastel Peppermint. This bottle looks like the full price ones on the shelves, and I've been looking for some nice minty greens.

It's not all that pastel or minty, the colours reads a lot more green than what the photos here show. When I swatch it I'll aim for colour accurate. It is a nice colour that I'm hoping I'll like on the nail, but for $1.00 I'm really not going to complain if I don't. My sister loves anything green so she can have this so she's not always wearing her baby poo green sheer atrocity all the time if it's a bust.
After much deliberation because this next polish was a tad separated, I picked up Voodoo Violet, part of the Glitterazzi line, which, if you've ever seen BYS products before, you'll know means it's a glitter bomb.

Voodoo Violet appears to be purple and a silvery purple micro glitter with purple and holographic silver hexes. Again, unswatched, so I'm not sure exactly. This reads more purple than it does in these shots. I don't have many purples or glitters so Voodoo Violet is a welcome addition to my meager stash.

I suppose I ought to do some "where to buys".

Rubi Nail Enamel can be bought from all Rubi Shoes stores, however When Doves Cry is an older polish and I don't believe it's being made anymore. You can also purchase Rubi Nail Enamel from the Cotton On website, although range is limited.

Models Prefer is a cheap drug store beauty line. Vixen came to me in a set of polished a few Christmases ago, so I don't know it's price or if it's even in stock anymore. I believe the drug store in question was Priceline, though.

BYS can be bought in a myraid of different places. In my area I know that it can be bought at Ice Accessories, Gloss and K Mart. The BYS website does list more but not any that are in WA. Pretty Pastel Peppermint appears to be discontinued as it's not on the site and was found in a discount box, but Voodoo Violet appears to be a core Glitterazzi polish.

Wow that was a long post for a simply manicure. I'll shut up now!
